LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Andre Berto capitalized on his first opportunity to win a championship belt many thought he would eventually claim. Now, critics are asking for him to prove his worth.
The WBC welterweight champion makes his first title defense on Saturday when he takes on veteran Steve Forbes at the Home Depot Center.
Berto (22-0, 19 KOs) started out as a highly touted prospect who shot up the rankings by impressing with a blend of speed and power.
Since making his debut in 2004, the 25-year-old has stopped 12 of his first 22 opponents inside of three rounds, including seven via first-round knockout.
As Berto has gradually stepped up to better competition, he has hit a few bumps in the road, notably being knocked down in the sixth round against Cosme Rivera in 2007, a fight he ended up easily winning by decision.
Then on June 21, the Winter Haven, Florida native captured his first belt - which was vacated after the retirement of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. - with a seventh-round technical knockout over Miguel Angel Rodriguez in a fight he was heavily favored to win.
Berto is a heavy favorite again and a win against Forbes could land the champion an even bigger title fight down the road.
However, Berto is not looking ahead.
"I will train my hardest as I consider Steve Forbes a talented and tough veteran," Berto said. "On (Saturday), I will successfully defend my WBC title against Forbes and put on a great fight for all my fans."
Forbes (33-6, 9 KOs) is a former super featherweight champion but has lost three of his last four bouts.
The 31-year-old had his moments but was simply outclassed when he lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Oscar De La Hoya on May 3 in his last fight.
