Lions release slot back Clermont
Dec 4, 2008 - 6:48 AM VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The B.C. Lions on Wednesday released Jason Clermont, ending the slot back's seven-year tenure with the team.Clermont concluded his Lions' career with 428 catches - the sixth-most in team history - and 5,917 yards with 37 touchdowns.
"This was a very difficult decision and an equally difficult day for the B.C. Lions football club," Lions general manager Wally Buono said. "We are grateful for Jason's hard work and dedication to excellence over the past seven seasons and we wish him the very best in the future."
Clermont had 50 catches for 640 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions advanced to the playoffs after posting an 11-7 record during the regular season.
The fourth overall selection in the 2002 Canadian draft, Clermont had six catches for 64 yards in two playoff games as B.C. was eliminated by the eventual Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders.
"I would like to thank the fans for their incredible support over the last seven years," Clermont said. "I leave the Lions with a Grey Cup ring (in 2006), three league awards and countless memories and friendships - all of which were made possible by the fans.
"While this is an end to my time with the Lions, I embrace the opportunity to continue playing and look forward to the months ahead as I train like never before to make an impact wherever I may end up."
Clermont was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie in 2002 and the Most Outstanding Canadian and a West Division All-Star in both 2004 and 2007. He was a CFL All-Star honor in 2007 and named the Most Valuable Canadian in the 2004 Grey Cup.
The Lions also announced they would not pick up the option year on running back Charles Roberts, who rushed for 298 yards and five touchdowns on 65 carries after being acquired from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in September.
