Argos great Krol dies

Dec 17, 2008 - 7:46 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Joe "King" Krol, one of the greatest players in the history of the Toronto Argonauts, has died. He was 89.

One of just four Boatmen in team history to have their jersey retired, Krol died Tuesday night, the team announced.

Krol, who played quarterback, running back and placekicker/punter, helped lead the Argos to five straight Grey Cup championships including three straight from 1945-47. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

"Joe was not only one of the greatest Argos of all time but one of the greatest CFL'ers of all-time," former teammate Nick Volpe said. "He was a tremendous guy to play with and he always put the team first."

In 2006, Krol was named No. 46 on TSN's top-50 CFL players of all-time.
