Eduardo charges to victory at SAS Championship

Sep 29, 2008 - 3:16 AM CARY, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Eduardo Romero fired a 6-under-par 66 on Sunday to win the SAS Championship.

Romero carded seven birdies and a bogey at Prestonwood Country Club to finish at 15-under 201, three strokes better than Tom Kite.

"It was a very good week, I played great," Romero said. "I feel I can win one or two more."

Kite signed for a 69 to finish at 12-under 204.

Andy Bean and Gil Morgan each shot 67 to tie for third at 11-under 205.

Bruce Fleisher shot 66 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead into the final round but settled for a 72 and tied for fifth at 10-under 206.

Romero started his round with a birdie and added three more on the front nine, including back-to-back at Nos. 6 and 7. He added three more birdies on the back nine and carded his only bogey on No. 13 where he missed a seven footer for par.

After the miscue, Romero made a birdie putt from 16 feet at 15 and two-putted from 40 feet for birdie on the par-5 17th.

"I was shooting for 66 today," Romero said. "When I made the birdie at 15, I felt I would win. I could breathe easier after that.

"I drove the ball really well this week but the real key was the putter. It gave me a lot of confidence in all parts of my game."

Kite had four birdies and a bogey - a three-putt on the par-4 10th - and was unable to keep pace with Romero.

"I played so-so today," Kite said. "I said yesterday I needed a low round and I just wasn't very sharp today. I didn't drive it well and I didn't hit my irons as well as I would have liked.

"Eduardo played awesome. I figured he'd be strong."
