Sluman grabs lead at AT&T Championship

Oct 26, 2008 - 3:13 AM SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) - Jeff Sluman has a one-stroke lead after Saturday's second round of the AT&T Championship.

Sluman carded a 7-under-par 64, forging a one-stroke advantage over John Cook and Mark James.

Sluman had seven birdies in a bogey-free round. He started with birdies at Nos. 1, 3 and 4.

"I've been playing pretty well lately, but for some reason I've never really done well here," Sluman said. "I always thought this course was well-suited to my style of play."

The defending champion of this $1.65 million event, Cook vaulted up the leaderboard with an 8-under 63. James entered the day with a one-stroke lead and signed for a 2-under 69.

Cook is hoping to join Lee Trevino and Jim Albus as the only players to win back-to-back titles here.

The AT&T Championship is the final full field event of the season and the last chance for players to crack the top 30 on the tour's money list and earn a spot in the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship, which we be held next week.

Last year, Jim Thorpe got the 30th and final spot and went on to win the season-ending event. Thorpe is at 9-under after a 63 on Saturday.

"The putter worked today," Thorpe said. "Nothing fell in yesterday so I changed putters today."

First prize is $247,500.
