Velazquez injured in Kentucky
Oct 3, 2008 - 9:51 PM LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- John Velazquez, who has ridden more than 3,000 winners in his legendary career, was hospitalized Friday when his mount fell in the seventh race at Keeneland.Aboard Tap Dancing, Velazquez was thrown from his horse after being unable to avoid a two-horse incident between Whacka Whacka and Rapid Man.
Velazquez, who was removed from the track on a stretcher, was transported to University of Kentucky Medical Center. According to Dr. Barry Schumer, Velazquez was "moving his extremities."
Jockey Jamie Theriot, who also was involved in the incident, walked to first aid where he was evaluated and cleared to ride by medical personnel.
None of the horses involved in the spill were injured.
No one has shouted yet.
