Diamondbacks place OF Upton on DL

Jul 19, 2008 - 1:02 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 20-year-old has been out since July 9, when he strained his left oblique while taking batting practice in Washington.

"He just wasn't in a position (on Thursday to be ready to play), even when we had him in the cage taking some tee swings where he couldn't let it go," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said on the team's web site. "How long it will be, I'm not sure."

Upton is hitting .242 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI in 83 games this season.

Veteran first baseman Tony Clark, who was acquired from the San Diego Padres on Thursday, replaces Upton on the 25-man roster.

Clark, 36, batted .239 with one homer and 11 RBI in 70 games with the Padres this season.
