Volquez will not make Sunday start

Sep 24, 2008 - 10:28 PM HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Edinson Volquez's dominant victory over the Houston Astros will be his last start of the season.

The Cincinnati Reds announced Wednesday that Volquez will not make his scheduled start on Sunday, giving the nod instead to second-year lefthander Adam Pettyjohn.

Volquez pitched 7 1/3 strong innings in Tuesday's 2-1 win, holding the Astros to one run and six hits while striking out nine and walking one. The All-Star righthander is 17-6 this season with a 3.21 ERA. His 206 strikeouts rank second in the National League.

Pettyjohn (0-0, 4.50 ERA), who has spent nearly all of his 11-year career in the minor leagues, last started on October 4, 2001 with the Detroit Tigers. He went seven innings, giving up three runs - one earned - and six hits in a 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Pettyjohn made 16 appearances that year, including nine starts, going 1-6 with a 5.82 ERA. This season, after being called up from Class AAA Louisville, he has made two relief appearances for the Reds.
