BOSTON (Ticker) -- Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell was placed on the disabled list prior to Game Four of the American League Division Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Monday.
Lowell, who has been battling a partially torn labrum in his right hip, went 0-for-4 with a walk and a pair of strikeouts in Game Three on Sunday. He played with a noticeable limp before being removed in the bottom of the 10th inning for a pinch runner during Boston's 5-4, 12-inning loss to the Angels.
"He's hurting today," Francona said. "We knew he was last night. We certainly, without having a running conversation during the game, we kind of know where he's at. When he finally did get on base, we ran for him just because, if there was a grounder in the hole and he can't get to second, that puts him in an unfair position. So when the game was over, he was very sore. He showed up today very sore."
The 34-year-old went hitless in eight at-bats in the division series, which Boston leads two-games-to-one.
In the event the Red Sox win their division series with the Angels, Lowell will not be eligible for the AL Championship Series because he was placed on the disabled list in the middle of the series.
Infielder Gil Velazquez replaced Lowell on the active roster and will be available Monday.
Kevin Youkilis will be starting at third base Monday while Mark Kotsay gets the start at first base and will hit seventh.
