Tigers decline option on SS Renteria

Oct 30, 2008 - 7:08 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers made Edgar Renteria a free agent Thursday, declining the shortstop's $12 million option for 2009.

Renteria was acquired before the 2008 season from the Atlanta Braves for promising starter Jair Jurrjens. He struggled with the Tigers, batting .270 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI.

The 33-year-old Renteria, who has played for four teams over the past five seasons, will receive a $3 million buyout.

Detroit also outrighted pitcher Gary Glover and catcher Dane Sardinha, allowing both to become minor league free agents.
