Royals, C Olivo exercise mutual contract options

Nov 3, 2008 - 11:00 PM KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Miguel Olivo will be returning to the Kansas City Royals next season, as the catcher and the team exercised their mutual contract options for 2009 on Monday.

In addition to the $2.7 million option for next year, Olivo and the Royals also agreed to a mutual option for 2010.

Olivo played 84 games - including 56 starts - for the Royals last season, hitting .255 with 12 homers and 41 RBI, while throwing out 39 percent (12-of-31) of attempted base-stealers. Over six years with five different clubs, the 30-year-old backstop has hit .241 with 73 home runs and 265 RBI in 640 games.

Kansas City also announced a few minor roster moves, purchasing the contract of catcher Brayan Pena while assigning pitcher Yasuhiko Yabuta and catcher Matt Tupman to Class AAA Omaha of the Pacific Coast League.
