Royals, C Olivo exercise mutual contract options
Nov 3, 2008 - 11:00 PM KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Miguel Olivo will be returning to the Kansas City Royals next season, as the catcher and the team exercised their mutual contract options for 2009 on Monday.In addition to the $2.7 million option for next year, Olivo and the Royals also agreed to a mutual option for 2010.
Olivo played 84 games - including 56 starts - for the Royals last season, hitting .255 with 12 homers and 41 RBI, while throwing out 39 percent (12-of-31) of attempted base-stealers. Over six years with five different clubs, the 30-year-old backstop has hit .241 with 73 home runs and 265 RBI in 640 games.
Kansas City also announced a few minor roster moves, purchasing the contract of catcher Brayan Pena while assigning pitcher Yasuhiko Yabuta and catcher Matt Tupman to Class AAA Omaha of the Pacific Coast League.
