Red Sox sign GM Epstein to extension

Nov 4, 2008 - 12:15 PM DANA POINT, California (Ticker) -- Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein announced Monday that he has signed a contract extension to remain with the club.

Arriving for baseball's general manager's meetings, Epstein told the Boston Globe that the deal was done "a while back," but did not disclose the terms.

Since becoming the youngest GM in baseball history when he was hired in November 2002, Epstein engineered Boston's first World Series championship in 86 years when the Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004.

After briefly resigning in October 2005, Epstein returned in January 2006 and enjoyed more success.

The Red Sox went on to win the World Series again in 2007 and were within one game of returning to the Fall Classic this past season. The Tampa Bay Rays defeated Boston in seven games in the American League Championship Series.

"When you sit back and think about being a general manager this is exactly the type of organization you'd want to work for," Epstein said. "Great fans, great ownership and a tremendous foundation of our scouting and player development which if we don't screw it up will lead to long term success. We're all in this game to work with good people and to try and win a World Series."
