Padres pick up option on OF Giles
Nov 7, 2008 - 10:54 PM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres on Friday exercised their $9 million contract option on outfielder Brian Giles for 2009.The 37-year-old veteran provided a solid on-base presence for the Padres last season, hitting .306 with a .398 on-base percentage - sixth-best in the National League - while adding 12 home runs and 63 RBI. He has been with San Diego since a late-season trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2003.
In 14 campaigns, Giles has clubbed 285 homers and driven in 1,055 runs while hitting .294, appearing in a pair of All-Star Games along the way.
