Giants sign SS Renteria

Dec 4, 2008 - 6:40 PM SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The San Francisco Giants continued to stay active in the free-agent market Thursday, signing shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year contract.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it is believed to be worth $18.5 million.

It marks the second signing in as many days for Giants, who inked reliever Bobby Howry to a one-year deal Wednesday.

San Francisco, which finished 72-90 this past season, also reached a deal with reliever Jeremy Affeldt last month and is aggressively pursuing prized free agent CC Sabathia.

"We're extremely excited to bring a player of Edgar's caliber to our organization," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "He is a complete player on both sides of the ball, a clutch performer and a winner.

"He has the hardware to show it with the awards he has garnered and a World Series ring. We look forward to seeing him in a Giants uniform."

The 33-year-old Renteria had a down year last season in Detroit, posting a .270 batting average with 10 home runs, 55 RBI and six stolen bases.

Entering his 14th season, Renteria is a career .290 hitter with 127 home runs, 817 RBI and 280 steals.

The five-time All-Star has fared well at San Francisco's AT&T Park over his career, compiling a career .344 average (32-for-93) in 23 games.

In addition to his lone season in Detroit, Renteria has played for Florida, St. Louis, Boston and Atlanta.
