Phillies re-sign LHP Moyer

Dec 15, 2008 - 7:42 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The World Series champions have brought back the senior citizen of their pitching staff.

The Phillies re-signed veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer to a two-year contract on Monday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Moyer, 46, went a team-best 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 starts last season. The 22-year veteran became the second-oldest player in World Series history when he started a 5-4 win over Tampa Bay in Game Three.

Moyer joined Jack Quinn, who was 47 when he pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1930, as the oldest players in World Series history.

Moyer's 246 career wins are third-most among active pitchers following the recent retirements of Greg Maddux and Mike Mussina. He currently trails Tom Glavine (305 wins) and Randy Johnson (295).

A sixth-round draft pick in 1984, Moyer is 246-185 with a 4.19 ERA in 637 games with the Cubs, Texas, Baltimore, Seattle, Boston, St. Louis and Philadelphia.
