Dodgers agree with RHP Vargas on one-year deal
Jan 6, 2009 - 12:56 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday agreed to terms on a one-year contract with righthander Claudio Vargas.Vargas, who pitched for the New York Mets last season, owns a 46-40 record with a 4.94 ERA in parts of six seasons with four teams.
"Claudio provides us with major league experience and versatility," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "He's won at the major league level and he can start or work out of the bullpen if necessary."
Vargas, 30, went 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 11 games - four starts - in 2008.
He has been playing for Aguilas del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League, going 3-1 with a 4.02 ERA and 31 strikeouts in six starts.
