UNLV coach Kruger receives extension

Aug 9, 2008 - 12:16 AM LAS VEGAS, Nevada (Ticker) -- The University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Friday signed men's basketball coach Lon Kruger to a one-year extension.

The deal, which was approved by the Nevada Board of Regents, will keep the 55-year-old Kruger in "Sin City" until 2013.

"The extension is well-deserved and we're looking forward to continuing the success of Rebel basketball with Lon Kruger as our coach," UNLV athletic director Mike Hamrick said.

"(My wife) Barb and I love living in Las Vegas and appreciate the opportunity to work with the young men in our program," Kruger said.

Kruger was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after leading UNLV to a 27-8 record and its second straight MWC tournament title this past season, his fourth at the school. The Runnin' Rebels lost to eventual national champion Kansas in the NCAA Tournament's second round.

The appearance in the NCAA Tournament was the second straight for UNLV, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2007, and marked the first time the Runnin' Rebels won a game in the event in consecutive years since 1990 and 1991. Overall, Kruger has guided UNLV to a 91-42 (.684) mark, including a record of 57-15 (.792) over the last two seasons.
