Nephew of Tubby Smith killed

Sep 22, 2008 - 6:26 PM WORCESTER, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- William L. Smith, the 19-year-old nephew of Minnesota basketball coach Tubby Smith, was stabbed to death during a fight early Sunday morning.

Police said that Smith, a student at Becker College, was stabbed once in the chest at an off-campus party. The fight between students and non-students occurred at approximately 2 a.m. EDT.

Smith, a Scotland, Maryland resident, was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m.

Police said that a weapon was recovered at the crime scene. No arrests have been made, although numerous witnesses have been interviewed.
