Florida investigates possible gambling

Nov 14, 2008 - 9:59 PM SUNNYVALE, California (Ticker) -- Yahoo! Sports reported Friday that a Universtiry of Florida athletic department investigation found that sophomore basketball player Nick Calathes ran up about $600 on on-line poker debt.

According to the report, the investigation did not find that Calathes or other Florida players bet on sporting events, which would be a violation of NCAA rules.

The school could not be reached for comment.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley told Yahoo the probe did not find any evidence of wrongdoing that would affect Calathes' eligibility or impact the school.

The NCAA has strict rules when it comes to gambling. Individuals found to be involved in point-shaving or wagering on their own school will be banned from the NCAA for life.

Calathes, who averaged a team-leading 15.3 points last season, is expected to start Friday when the Gators open their season against Toledo.
