Washington to retire jersey of Roy

Dec 5, 2008 - 1:04 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Brandon Roy will have his jersey retired by Washington in a pregame ceremony next month, the school announced Thursday.

Roy, who averaged 14.3 points in four seasons with the Huskies, will have his No. 3 sent to the rafters prior to Washington's Pac-10 matchup with Southern California on January 22, 2009.

A current member of the Portland Trail Blazers and the 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year, Roy helped the Huskies to an 84-42 record from 2003-06, three NCAA Tournament appearances and two trips to the "Sweet 16."

"I would like to thank president Mark Emmert, (athletic director) Scott Woodward and (coach Lorenzo Romar) for this tremendous honor," Roy said. "It was always my dream to go to school at UW and play basketball for the Huskies. I cherish the time I spent at UW, as it allowed me to develop as a basketball player and grow as a person.

"January 22 will be a very special day for me and my family, and I look forward to sharing it with all of the great UW fans."

The only Washington player to average 20 points in the season over the last 20 years, Roy was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year for the 2005-06 season before being selected sixth overall in the NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
