Summit undergoes shoulder surgey
Sep 25, 2008 - 4:54 PM KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt underwent successful shoulder surgery, the school announced Thursday.Dr. Edwin Spencer and Tennessee team orthopedists Dr. Russ Betcher and Dr. Greg Mathien performed arthroscopic surgery on Summitt's right shoulder on Thursday at Ft. Sanders West Surgery Center to address recurrent instability problems with her shoulder.
Summitt, who is beginning her 35th season at Tennessee, is the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history with a 983-182 overall record. She dislocated her shoulder on March 5 prior to the Southeastern Conference tournament while chasing a raccoon off the back deck at her home. The raccoon was about to attack Summitt's yellow Labrador Retrievers.
"Pat is doing well," said Jenny Moshak, Tennessee associate athletics director for sports medicine. "She will begin rehabbing the shoulder in about a week."
