Report: Houston lineman collapses during workout

Aug 14, 2007 - 4:00 AM HOUSTON (Ticker) - Houston offensive lineman Jerrod Butler was in stable condition Monday after passing out while lifting weights earlier in the day.

Television station KRIV reported that the 6-2, 330-pound Butler was hospitalized after he passed out in the athletic department weight room shortly after 9 a.m. local time.

Team physician Dr. James Muntz told KRIV that Butler was in stable condition at Methodist Hospital. Later in the day, Muntz said the redshirt sophomore was improving.

"Seems like he is doing better," Muntz told the station. "He is very stable in the intensive care unit. Mainly we've been able to go over him and get some laboratory (tests) back. Everything we see looks promising, kidney functions and things like that. We remain very optimistic that he'll do well."

Houston athletic trainer Mike O'Shea told KRIV that CPR was administered to Butler and a defibrillator also was used.

Muntz told the station it was too early to determine the cause of Butler's collapse.
