USC to wear red on road against UCLA

Dec 6, 2008 - 1:59 PM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Southern California coach Pete Carroll is so intent on restoring a tradition that he is willing to give up timeouts to do it.

Carroll announced earlier this week that the fifth-ranked Trojans will wear cardinal jerseys for Saturday's contest against cross-town rival UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

This is a violation of an NCAA rule that requires visiting teams to wear white jerseys. Teams that ignore the rule forfeit one of their three first-half timeouts.

"I just thought it was a really cool tradition - the spectacle of it," Carroll said Monday.

The last time USC and UCLA each wore their home jerseys was in 1982 when they shared the Los Angeles Coliseum. The NCAA rule change a year later forced the visiting team to wear white.

With the Trojans nearly a five-touchdown favorite, it is anticipated that UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel will call a timeout in the opening moments of the game so that both teams play with two timeouts in the first half.
