Southern Miss WR Brown has leg surgery

Dec 22, 2008 - 11:01 PM HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Southern Miss standout wide receiver DeAndre Brown underwent surgery late Sunday night to repair a broken left leg suffered in the Golden Eagles' 30-27 overtime victory over Troy in the New Orleans Bowl.

Brown had the operation to set a broken tibia and fibula. Southern Miss said the surgery was "a success" in a statement released Monday by the school.

"We expect a full recovery for DeAndre, as he will start rehabbing right away in preparation for him to be ready for next season," Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora said.

Brown sustained the gruesome injury while running a deep passing route in the first quarter of Sunday's contest. After writhing in pain on the turf, Brown was lifted on to a cart before being taken to a hospital.

Brown set a school single-season record with 67 receptions this year for Southern Miss (7-6). The freshman led the Golden Eagles with 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns.
