Notre Dame coach Weis has successful surgery

Dec 30, 2008 - 4:38 AM SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) -- Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis on Monday underwent successful knee replacement surgery on his right knee.

Dr. Willard G. Yergler of South Bend Orthopedics Associates performed the hour-long surgery.

"The severe deterioration of the bone explains the severe pain he suffered the last three weeks," Yergler said in a statement.

"With the knee replacement, he'll start walking (Monday) afternoon."

Weis has months of rehabilitation ahead of him, including the prospect of surgery on his left knee, which was injured in Notre Dame's win over Michigan.
