Report: Boston College set to fire Jagodzinski

Jan 7, 2009 - 1:22 AM BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Boston College is reportedly set to fire head coach Jeff Jagodzinski, who went against the school's wishes and met with the New York Jets about their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday.

ESPN reported that two sources close to the situation said Jagodzinski is done at BC.

According to multiple media outlets, Jagodzinski met with Jets officials late Tuesday, in spite of the fact that Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo earlier this week warned that he would be fired if he did so.

Jagodzinski signed a five-year contract in December of 2006, and DeFilippo wants him to honor it for more than the two years that have elapsed.

Jagodzinski, 45, was to contact DeFilippo if he did interview, but has failed to do so as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.

"I've called several times and haven't heard anything," DeFilippo told the Boston Globe. "I'm still waiting to hear from him."

One source told ESPN that Jagodzinski's decision to follow through on the interview made his fate "a done deal."

The Jets are looking for a replacement for Eric Mangini, who was fired after three seasons last week.

Jagodzinski - reportedly a long shot to land the job - has ties to New York quarterback Brett Favre from their days together with the Green Bay Packers.

He was the Packers' tight ends coach from 1999-2003 and the club's offensive coordinator in 2006 before he took over at Boston College. In two seasons at Boston College, Jagodzinski has compiled a 20-8 record, guiding the Eagles to a pair of ACC Atlantic Division titles.
