Jan 9, 2009 - 6:21 PM CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Clemson announced Friday that Kevin Steele is joining coach Dabo Swinney's staff as defensive coordinator.

Steele spent the last two seasons at Alabama. He was defensive coordinator in 2007 before assuming the title of associate head coach and head coach of defense this past season.

"Kevin Steele is one of the most respected coaches in the nation," Swinney said. "He has served under Hall of Fame coaches who have won national championships and also has experience in the NFL."

Under Steele, a South Carolina native, Alabama ranked third in the nation in total defense this past season. The Crimson Tide went 12-0 during the regular season, then endured disappointment with losses in the Southeastern Conference title game and Sugar Bowl.

Overall, Steele has 23 years of collegiate coaching experience and four years of experience in the NFL.

"Clemson has an outstanding tradition and I am excited about the opportunity to work for coach Swinney who is one of the bright young coaches in the game" Steele said.
