Bruins waive LW Schaefer, C Reich

Oct 8, 2008 - 12:35 AM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Boston Bruins fans may have seen the last of Peter Schaefer and Jeremy Reich.

Schaefer and Reich, along with center Nate Thompson, were placed on waivers by the Bruins on Tuesday as the team hopes to assign the trio to Providence of the American Hockey League.

Acquired from Ottawa in July 2007, Schaefer appeared in 63 games for Boston last season, recording nine goals and 17 assists. The 31-year-old left wing added a tally and four points in seven playoff contests.

A third-round pick of Vancouver in 1995, Schaefer has collected 98 goals and 161 assists in 556 career games with the Canucks, Senators and Bruins.

The 29-year-old Reich notched two goals, two assists and 78 penalty minutes in 58 contests with Boston in 2007-08. Selected by Chicago in the second round of the 1997 draft, the center has registered two tallies, six points and 161 penalty minutes in 99 career games with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Bruins.

A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Thompson made his NHL debut with Boston in 2006-07, appearing in four games without recording a point. The 24-year-old spent last season with Providence, where he registered 19 goals and 20 assists in 75 contests.

The Bruins on Tuesday also assigned defenseman Matt Hunwick to Providence and center Carl Soderberg to Malmo in Sweden.

In addition, Boston announced blue-liner Mike Egener has elected to retire. A second-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2003, the 24-year-old was signed by the Bruins as a free agent on August 28 but waived on September 28.

The 6-4, 195-pound Egener never appeared in an NHL game but recorded six goals and eight assists in 205 contests in the AHL over four seasons.
