Real Salt Lake acquires F Johnson from Chicago
Aug 23, 2008 - 2:00 AM SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Real Salt Lake on Friday acquired veteran forward Will Johnson from the Chicago Fire for conditional SuperDraft picks in 2009 and 2011.The Canadian-born Johnson has spent the last three years playing in the Netherlands after one season with Chicago. He played for Heerenveen of the Dutch Premier Division in 2006 and has since been on loan to Doetinchem side De Graafschap of the Netherlands' First Division.
He re-signed with Major League Soccer on August 16. The Fire, for whom Johnson scored one goal in six appearances in 2005, still owned his rights upon his reinstatement to the league but moved quickly to reach a trade agreement with Real Salt Lake.
The 21-year Johnson joins a Salt Lake squad (7-7-6) that is attempting to qualify for the postseason for the first time in its four-year history. The club is currently second in the Western Conference with 27 points, five behind Houston (8-4-8).
