SECAUCUS, New Jersey (Ticker) -- New York Red Bulls midfielder Dave van den Bergh will undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia, the team announced Tuesday.

The procedure will take place Friday in Munich, Germany, and van den Bergh is expected to miss two to three weeks.

The Dutchman currently is second on the team in goals with six and most recently scored the game-winner in New York's come-from-behind 2-1 win against Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Giants Stadium.

Now in his second season with the Red Bulls, van den Bergh has started in 22 games.

In a corresponding move, the Red Bulls on Tuesday signed midfielder Matthew Mbuta after agreeing to personal terms and a fee with Crystal Palace Baltimore of the United Soccer Leagues' Second Division.

Terms were not disclosed.

Mbuta appeared in 17 games for Crystal Palace Baltimore, tallying two goals and two assists while helping the club to the USL-2 semifinals. In 2006, Mbuta was named to the USL-2 All-League First Team.

Also on Tuesday, New York waived forward Chris Meglaoudis.
