Revolution M Smith suspended two additional games

Oct 29, 2008 - 10:45 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New England Revolution will be without midfielder Khano Smith for a hefty portion of the MLS Cup playoffs this year, as the league on Wednesday added two games to his automatic one-game suspension stemming from his red card on Saturday.

The 6-3, 190-pound veteran also was fined $1,000. He was given a red card in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Kansas City after taking down Wizards forward Herculez Gomez with a hard foul late in the first half.

A red card brings with it an automatic $250 fine and one-game suspension, but the league's disciplinary committee ruled that Smith "endangered the safety of his opponent" with the play.

The Revolution, the third seed in the Eastern Conference after finishing the regular season at 12-11-7, begin their playoff run on Thursday against the second-seeded Chicago Fire (13-10-7) in the conference semifinals. Should the Revolution lose their two-game, first-round series, Smith would miss the first match of the 2009 regular season.

In addition, MLS also fined Revolution coach Steve Nicol $1,000 for his critical comments that appeared in Sunday's Boston Globe.
