Report: Rapids to name Smith as coach

Nov 11, 2008 - 12:36 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rapids will introduce a new head coach on Tuesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

While the team did not officially divulge the individual's identity, the Denver Post is reporting that interim coach Gary Smith will be named and former teammate Steve Guppy will serve as the assistant.

Smith succeeded Fernando Clavijo in midseason to guide the Rapids, who narrowly missed the playoffs after a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake on the last match of the season.

The newspaper cited comments made by Guppy on a New York's 1280 WHTK radio show.

Guppy told the radio station that Smith had been offered the job and, in turn, he had been asked to assist.

The 39-year-old Guppy, who played with Smith in England during the 1990s, also played with Rochester of the USL First Division this past season.

The Rhinos reported on their web site on Wednesday of Guppy's departure to the Rapids.

"Steve has been a very valuable asset in the short period he was with us," Rhinos head coach Darren Tilley said. "His influence was felt throughout the club and we wish him well as he moves on in his coaching career."
