Fever lands F Douglas in blockbuster

Feb 19, 2008 - 6:32 PM INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indianapolis Fever on Tuesday acquired two-time All-Star forward Katie Douglas in a trade from the Connecticut Sun.

The 28-year-old Douglas lands in Indianapolis in exchange for 2006 All-Star Tamika Whitmore, a first-round pick in the 2008 draft and the rights to guard Jessica Foley. Foley has remained in Australia since being drafted in the third round in 2005.

The 6-foot Douglas, a former All-American at Purdue, has been in the hunt for the MVP award for the last two seasons. In 2007, she averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the Sun.

"Acquiring Katie Douglas is another big milestone for our franchise," Fever general manager Kelly Krauskopf said. "She is one of the top 10 players in the league and has become one of the elite guards in the game.

"I have been impressed at how she has continued to get better each and every season. She is a fierce competitor who is in the prime of her career. I am very excited about adding her to our core group of players as we continue our quest for a WNBA title."

The 6-2 Whitmore, 30, averaged 10.9 points last season, down on 15.5 per game in 2006 - her first season in Indiana.

Also Tuesday, the Fever announced they had re-signed Canadian veteran Tammy Sutton-Brown.

The 6-4 center averaged 12.0 points and 5.4 rebounds in 2007, her first season in Indiana.
