Atlanta gets No. 1 pick in WNBA draft

Dec 9, 2008 - 9:18 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) - The Atlanta Dream will have the top pick in the WNBA draft in 2009.

The Dream, which had the league's worst record at 4-30 this year, secured the first pick by winning the draft lottery on Tuesday.

"The last two days have been great for our organization," Dream general manager-coach Marynell Meadors. "It gives us an opportunity to get better faster. These two picks are definitely going to help us contend in the league."

For the first time in league history, the lottery went according to the odds for the first five selectinos.

The Washington Mystics will have the No. 2 pick, followed by the Chicago Sky, Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury.

The order of selection for the remainder of the first round and the ensuing two rounds is based on each team's finish in 2008.

Indiana will get the sixth pick, followed by Sacramento, New York, the Mystics (via trade), Connecticut, Detroit, Seattle and the Dream (via trade).
