Yankees 3B Rodriguez highlights Silver Slugger award recipients

Nov 10, 2007 - 12:30 AM LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Who says Alex Rodriguez doesn't come through in the postseason?

Rodriguez, who won the Hank Aaron Award two weeks ago as the top slugger in the American League, highlighted the 18 players named to the 2007 Silver Slugger team announced on Friday.

A two-time AL MVP, Rodriguez was honored for the ninth time, which is tied for third most all-time with Barry Larkin and Manny Ramirez.

The award, which is determined by a vote of major league coaches and managers, is given to those players who are felt to be the best offensive producers at each position.

Rodriguez is joined by fellow Yankees Derek Jeter, who won his second straight at shortstop, and catcher Jorge Posada, a five-time winner.

David Ortiz of the world-champion Boston Red Sox is the the designated hitter for the fourth straight season while Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim right fielder Vladimir Guerrero won his fourth straight and seventh overall.

Joining Guerrero in the American League outfield is three-time winner Magglio Ordonez of the Detroit Tigers and two-time winner Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners.

First baseman Carlos Pena, the first Tampa Bay Rays player ever to win the award, and Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco were first-time AL winners.

In the National League infield, Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder, second baseman Chase Utley and shortstop Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets third baseman David Wright won awards.

The outfield winners were Matt Holliday of the Colorado Rockies, Carlos Beltran of the New York Mets and Carlos Lee of the Houston Astros.

Righthander Micah Owings of the Arizona Diamondbacks and catcher Russell Martin of the Los Angeles Dodgers round out the NL team.
