Red Sox vote to give Ramirez playoff share

Oct 17, 2008 - 3:05 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Manny Ramirez still has a vested interest in how well the Boston Red Sox do in the playoffs.

The Boston Herald reported Friday that Red Sox players last month voted Ramirez a two-thirds share of playoff money.

The vote reflected the fact that Ramirez played two-thirds of the season in Boston before he was traded at the July 31 deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Only players who were on the roster for the entire season were eligible to vote, according to the report. For players who did not spend the entire season with the team, voting players first determined whether the player in question would get a payout for exact time on the roster, or a larger percentage, reflecting their contribution to the team.

The vote was reportedly divided on Ramirez.

"Some wanted him to be paid days," a source told the newspaper. "It was obviously a somewhat sensitive subject with some guys, but we didn't spend too much time on it. After the vote, we moved on."

In comparison, Nomar Garciaparra, traded away by the Red Sox at the deadline before the 2004 World Series win, received a three-quarters share from his former teammates after spending the final two months of the year with the Chicago Cubs.

Jason Bay, obtained by the Red Sox as part of the three-team deal involving Ramirez, reportedly received more than a third of a share, though it was unclear if he was voted a half- or three-quarters share.

Ramirez will also collect a postseason share for his two months with the Dodgers, who were bounced from the National League Championship Series on Wednesday in five games by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last year, a full share for the World Series-champion Red Sox totaled $308,235.75, based on a players' pool of $18.9 million.
