Blue Jays sign RHP Clement

Dec 12, 2008 - 3:56 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays added a potential arm to their pitching staff on Friday, signing righthander Matt Clement to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

Terms were not disclosed.

Clement, 34, was most recently in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization, posting a 3-0 record with a 5.23 ERA in 16 games - including four starts - over three minor league levels this past season.

Over nine seasons at the major league level with San Diego, Florida, the Chicago Cubs and Boston, Clement has an 87-86 record with a 4.47 ERA in 238 games.

Clement, a 2005 All-Star with the Red Sox, posted a 10-2 record prior to the All-Star break that season. But he finished the year 13-6 with a 4.57 ERA after being struck in the head by a line drive from Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford on July 26, 2005.

Clement made just 12 starts in 2006, posting a 5-5 record with a 6.61 ERA, before having season-ending shoulder surgery in September.

He did not pitch in 2007 and was signed by the Cardinals prior to this past season.
