Detroit Tigers

Team Report

DH Gary Sheffield, who homered twice in Friday's 6-4 victory to
give him 499 for his career, could not connect for No. 500 on
Sunday. He came relatively close in the sixth inning, driving a
fly ball to deep right field that was caught just short of the
warning track. However, Sheffield will get one more opportunity
to join the exclusive 500-home run club, as the Tigers will
visit the Chicago White Sox for a make-up game on Monday
afternoon. ... SS Edgar Renteria left the game before the fifth
inning with a left pectoral strain. In the fourth inning, he
walked and score on CF Curtis Granderson's bases-loaded walk but
did not come out in the top of the fifth. He is listed as
day-to-day and will likely not play on Monday. ... Should the
Tigers defeat the White Sox on Monday, they would move into a
tie for fourth place with the Kansas City Royals in the American
League Central Division. Should they lose, they would finish
the season all alone in last place.
