No. 10 LSU smothers ULM
Sep 14, 2014 - 4:03 AM Baton Rouge, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - It took some time, but the LSU offense got on a roll. The 10th-ranked Tigers' defense, meanwhile, was in top form throughout Saturday's 31-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
LSU scored rushing touchdowns on each of its first three second-half possessions to blow open what had been a 10-0 game at halftime.
Anthony Jennings completed 11-of-18 passes for 139 yards with one interception for the Tigers (3-0), who posted a second consecutive shutout and extended their regular-season winning streak against non-conference opponents to an FBS-record 48 games.
"Defensively, we are playing dominant football," said Tigers head coach Les Miles.
LSU held Louisiana-Monroe (2-1) to 93 total yards of offense and six first downs.
"We just got our tails whipped on everything. We couldn't get open, we couldn't block anybody. There was nothing there," said Louisiana-Monroe head coach Todd Berry.
After consecutive three-and-outs to begin the game, Tigers running back Kenny Hilliard converted a 3rd-and-2 with a 3-yard run. Jennings moved the chains again with a 23-yard pass to John Diarse on third down, setting up Colby Delahoussaye's 21-yard field goal.
LSU reached the end zone on its next series. Darrel Williams capped a 10-play sequence with a 22-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
The Tigers' offense went stagnant again, but came to life after halftime.
Jennings connected with Travin Dural for 32 yards and hit Trey Quinn for 10 yards. Hilliard then ran seven yards to the one-yard line before Williams scored his second touchdown on the next play.
LSU began its next drive at the Warhawks' 34. After Jennings converted a 4th- and-1, Leonard Fournette scored on a 24-yard run.
Hilliard had a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
