EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Brett Favre was bigger than the game for one day.

Favre made his debut as quarterback of the New York Jets and threw a touchdown pass in a 13-10 loss to the Washington Redskins on Saturday night.

Redskins rookie quarterback Colt Brennan threw a 33-yard scoring pass to Jason Goode with 1:09 left, capping a four-play, 80-yard drive keeping Washington (3-0) unbeaten in the preseason.

The Jets (1-1) had a chance to force overtime, but Mike Nugent clanked a 23-yard field goal attempt off the left upright as time expired.

Acquired in a trade after spending the previous 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Favre made his return to the field after announcing, then renouncing, his retirement.

Following a contentious period between Favre and Green Bay management, the Jets stepped up to trade a conditional draft pick, which stands at a fourth-rounder but could go as high as a No. 1 pick.

Favre was greeted to a warm welcome by a crowd that sparsely populated Giants Stadium, which has a capacity nearing 80,000. Those who attended were there to see his historic debut.

"(I was) nervous, excited," Favre said. "(There were) some feelings I have not felt in a while, but I was excited."

Favre played 14 snaps - all in the first quarter - and converted a 4-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Dustin Keller to complete his second and final drive, making it 7-0.

"It was a simple play," Favre said. "We had Keller and (Bubba) Franks on two quick outs. Keller had better leverage at the 5- (yard line), Franks had a little trouble getting off the line. It was pretty simple."

Favre finished 5-for-6 for 48 yards and was not intercepted. He was sacked once for a 10-yard loss, and his lone incompletion came on 3rd-and-16 when he misfired toward running back Thomas Jones on a short pass to the right flat, ending New York's opening drive.

Despite operating under a limited playbook, coach Eric Mangini elected to allow Favre and the first-team offense to go for a 4th-and-1 from their own 40-yard line just five plays into the game, and Jones responded with a three-yard run.

Jason Campbell started for the Redskins and stayed under center until the first play of the second quarter. Campbell was 4-of-10 for 28 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and led Washington to its first points, a 30-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham, before departing.

Suisham connected from 36 yards later in the second quarter to make it 7-6.

Washington running back Rock Cartwright gained 90 yards on six carries, including a 73-yard burst in the second quarter that brought the ball to the Jets 11. After a penalty and a two-yard run, the Redskins' Todd Collins was sacked and left the game for one play. Derek Devine replaced Collins and was intercepted at the goal line by James Ihedigbo.
