MIAMI (Ticker) -- Rodney Stuckey had 23 points and five assists to lead the Detroit Pistons past the Miami Heat, 95-91, in overtime Sunday, the opening night of the NBA preseason.
Jason Maxiell opened up the extra period with back-to-back buckets to stake the Pistons to a slim lead, and they hung on from there.
Stuckey, a second-year player who averaged 7.7 points in his rookie campaign, buried a 12-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 86-86 but fouled out in the first minute of overtime.
However, the Pistons scored the first six points of the extra period and held on for the win. Fifteen seconds into the frame, Maxiell knocked down a mid-range shot and drew a foul, though he missed the ensuing free throw. On the next possession, he buried a turnaround jumper to give Detroit a four-point cushion.
The fourth-year forward finished with 13 points and Richard Hamilton chipped in with 12 on 5-of-8 shooting for the Pistons.
The second overall pick in the 2008 draft, rookie Michael Beasley led the Heat with 16 points, including 13 in the third quarter. He showed off a variety of nifty moves around the basket. The 6-9, 235-pound forward also had six rebounds in 21 minutes.
Heat superstar Dwyane Wade scored 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting with seven assists and three steals in 22 minutes.
Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups scored six points in 23 minutes but was responsible for six of the team's 24 turnovers.
The Pistons led by as many as 12 in the first half until the Heat went on an 18-4 run in the second quarter, with veteran center Mark Blount scoring seven straight points.
